This is what ya get when all you have is printer paper and blue and black ink pens. Thanks to our friend Peter Yoder who lives across the hall for the felt letters.
Our lovely door decorations.

His birthday was on Friday and luckily I didn't have to work : ) We started the day off with some yummy (if I do say so myself) French Toast. I even left the french baguette out overnight to become stale. It really made a difference- lecker, lecker!
Sam did have to run to the University to give an English lesson. When he got back we packed a lunch and went out for a walk and a pic-nic. It was a gorgeous day!
Our pic-nic spot in the Volks Park in Mainz.

After our pic-nic, we quickly packed our bags and headed to Frankfurt for the night. Thanks to my very generous parents we had a voucher for a high class hotel in Frankfurt. It was our Christmas present from them but we saved it up for a special occasion. It was easily the nicest hotel I've ever been in.
The very first bed we have slept in together since we moved to Germany. Everywhere we have stayed so far has had two single beds pushed together.

The mini bar which we didn't touch because the mini coke bottle was 4 Euro (over $5). We calculated out our spending exactly so as to make the very most of the voucher.

As we toured the hotel we came upon the 'Rauchen Raum" - the smoking lounge. It was filled with lots of pictures of famous people who have come to this hotel for a smoke. Some visitors include Bill Clinton, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner and many more.

After our lovely dinner in the hotel restaurant we went for a dip! After waiting 30 minutes to rest, of course.
Here is the outdoor pool. We jumped in here for a quick lap or two and then ran inside to get in the warm indoor pool.

Our room was equiped with robes and slippers so we could better enjoy the indoor spa area. Huge, cushioned, double size lounge chairs with pillows waited for us with all the magazines we could want (including some English ones) and a full poolside bar and restaurant food menu.

After our late night at the pool we enojoyed some MTV and British CNN (the only English channels) and had sweet dreams in our king size bed. We slept in and then had a delicious German style breakfast.
Danke schoen a million times to my mom for thinking of this idea. It gave us the perfect way to make Sam's birthday extra special.
So, back to Mainz on Saturday afternoon. We went for a glorious run in the sunshine along the Rhein river and then went out for a romantic dinner in a secret place I picked out (or so Sam THOUGHT!)
SURPRISE!!!!!!!!!! I led him to a great Mexican spot (his FAVE food) and all our friends were waiting there to celebrate with us. YAY!!! I got him : )

This is Jen, our best friend! Shis is awesome. Bonus- she is from Texas so we get to hang out next year when we live there. She works for the church we go to here and is also heading home in July after being here for 4 years.
Jen made this whole surprise party possible. It is extremely difficult to do anything wihtout Sam knowing considering we live in ONE room and we share a computer on which we are constantly logging in and out of each other's email accounts. Not to mention my Facebook account is really OURS. So I asked Jen to help me out and she did and it was perfect! We had friends from the institute where we live and from church and friends we've met through friends. It was a great time and it ended with Jen's incredible chocolate chocolate chocolate cake and then back to our place for some Farkle - a game Sam recieved from our friend Evan. Thanks to everyone who helped make Sam's 30th great even though we weren't with family and friends from home.
